Mary Ann Read and the Injured Lion 1819

Mary Ann Read and the Injured Lion 1819

Young Mary Ann made three very purposeful pink stitches on one of the lion’s legs which are simply adorable.  This reproduction sampler features a quote by the 18th century English poet, Alexander Pope.  “Teach me to feel anothers woe, to hide the faults I see.  The marcy I to others show, that marcy show to me.”  This is not a misspelling of the word mercy.  The spelling was actually changed years later when the Oxford English dictionary standardized spellings and attempted to make them match their roots.

FLOSS WAXERS

Wax strengthens thread, smooths floss, and reduces tangles. Gently pull thread between thumb and waxer two times, then pull thread between thumb and finger to smooth.  The color of beeswax is variable.  Sunlight is a natural bleach for beeswax.  If you would like to lighten the color of your waxer, place near a window for a few days.  Waxer will not melt unless temperature is in excess of 140 degrees F.
